New FAA Rule Establishes Category For Powered Lift Aircraft

Defines Pilot Qualifications, Training, and Operational Requirements

The FAA announced a new rule at the 2024 NBAA-BACE that signals the highly anticipated acceptance and integration of powered lift into the FAA’s domain of aviation that it says will chart the path for air travel of the future. The rule establishes the new category of “powered lift” aircraft which have characteristics of both helicopters and airplanes. Operations in the category include air taxi, cargo delivery, and a variety of additional operations in both urban and rural areas.

AURA AERO To Build Production Facility In Florida

Chooses Volusia County For 500,00 Square Foot Plant

France-based aircraft builder AURA AERO announced it has selected Daytona Beach International Airport (KDAB) to build its 500,000 square foot manufacturing and assembly facility for production of its hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA). AURA AERO is building the facility to meet demand in the growing North American market, while also progressing with its new facility in Toulouse-Francazal Airport (QYF) in Cugnaux, France.

Universal Avionics ClearVision Alleviates LED Issues

Changes In Approach Lighting Made Many Enhanced Vision Sensors Ineffective

Universal Avionics (UA) announced at NBAA-BACE that its ClearVision Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) mitigates recent FAA directives that replaced runway lighting with LED lights. The FAA announced in March 2024 that due to the dwindling supply of incandescent lamps used in runway lighting systems, airports would be required to replace them with more energy-efficient LED lights.

Chuck Coleman Lost In Accident At Las Cruces Air & Space Expo

Chuck Coleman Fatally Injured During Aerobatic Routine

Spectators at the 2nd annual Las Cruces Air & Space Expo were shocked and stunned into silence after watching renowned stunt pilot Charles T. “Chuck” Coleman impact the ground during his routine on October 20. Many of those attending the show captured video of Coleman’s routine and one showed him performing rolls, loops, and cuban maneuvers. After about four minutes as he did a series of rolls while climbing, he appeared to enter a tumbling maneuver and descended into an inverted position and then descended in a nose-down attitude into the ground.

NTSB Prelim: Cirrus Design Corp SR22

(Witness) Observed The Accident Airplane “Bank Sharply Then Stall” Before It “Fell Into A Rapid Descent With 3 Rotations”  

On September 27, 2024, about 1010 mountain daylight time, a Cirrus Design Corp. SR-22, N831AZ, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Provo, Utah. The pilot and pilot-rated passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Review of Air Traffic Control Tower communication recordings revealed that the controller instructed the pilot to enter the airport traffic pattern on downwind for runway 13.
