NASA recently announced that astronauts Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson are being booted from the upcoming SpaceX Crew-9 mission. The U.S. Marine Corps accepted the last of the VH-92A presidential helicopters built by Sikorsky in a recent ceremony in the company’s Owego, New York, modification facility. Helicopters built by Sikorsky have flown every U.S. president since 1957. Registration is open for the Air Race Classic’s shorter one-day test, the ARC Air Derby, with a new twist for 2024: Co-ed teams are permitted to enter. The Air Race Classic (ARC), the epicenter of women’s air racing which began 95 years ago with the Women’s Air Derby and evolved through the All Women’s Transcontinental Air Race (aka the Powder Puff Derby) to grow into the competition it is today, created a second event during the pandemic year of 2021 when the ARC was canceled two years in a row. The one-day contest is known as the ARC Air Derby, and the 2024 edition has a twist that breaks with traditional women’s air racing: men will be allowed on teams for the first time.

On August 3, 2024, about 1125 eastern daylight time, an experimental, amateur-built Glasair 3 airplane, N121CH, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Oxford, Maine. The airline transport pilot sustained serious injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 test flight. The flight was the airplane’s seventh test flight in phase 1 of the amateur build. The purpose of the flight was to evaluate takeoff and landing performance. The Federal Aviation Administration has given SpaceX the go-ahead to resume Falcon 9 flight operations. The aircraft remains under investigation after a recent landing slip-up. The agency reported that one of its landing legs had collapsed, causing its first-stage booster rocket to topple over into the Atlantic.

On July 31, the first of many EagleEye radars rolled off the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) production line. It will be a “drop-in” enhancement for the current U.S. Army’s Gray Eagle Extended Range UAS. The EagleEye was built by GA-ASI. This company is a subsidiary of General Atomics, an RPA, radar, and electro-optic system manufacturer. Established in 1993, GA-ASI is a military contractor that produces a range of tech, including UAS and radar imagery systems.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced that a family of hikers was rescued by search and rescue (SAR) aircraft after finding themselves stranded in the Guadalupe Mountains in southwest Texas. On the afternoon of August 20, Guadalupe Mountains National Park Rangers alerted DPS’s Aircraft Operations Division (AOD) of a family of hikers in distress on the side of Guadalupe Peak.

The EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, has rolled out a new feature that will allow visitors to easily obtain additional in-depth information about museum exhibits as they wander around on their own. An initial batch of self-guided QR codes have been added to selected exhibits that visitors can scan and receive the content on their mobile devices.
