Airborne-NextGen 09.04.24: Lunar Payloads, REGENT Approved, SpaceX Resumes

NASA has awarded Intuitive Machines of Houston a $116.9 million contract to deliver six payloads to the Moon’s South Pole. The cargo includes science experiments and technology demonstrations, and is slated to arrive on Earth’s satellite in 2027. REGENT Craft has announced the Coast Guard has approved its Navigation Safety Risk Assessment. The approval means the Rhode Island-based company is now authorized to begin testing its full-scale prototype in Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. Unqualified Pilot Was In Control During Recent Apache Crash

The Colonel Had Less Than an Hour of Apache Sim Experience

An investigation was recently completed on the February 12 crash of an AH-64D Apache helicopter. The report stated that the chopper was being flown by an F-35 pilot with no significant rotary wing experience when it went down. Moving forward, the report recommended that the Pentagon’s National Guard Bureau reassess their orientation flight procedures in all Apache units.

Kim Will Serve as a Flight Engineer on the Upcoming Expedition 72/73

NASA announced on August 28 that Jonny Kim, an astronaut and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, will soon be making his first trip to the Space Station. He will serve as a flight engineer and member of the Expedition 72/73 crew in March 2025. He, along with two others, will spend eight months on the ISS conducting scientific research and technology demonstrations.

NTSB Prelim: Cessna 182K

Airplane’s Track Ended At The Start Of The Mountainous Terrain In The Bob Marshall Wilderness

On August 08, 2024, about 1255 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 182K, N2764Q, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Augusta, Montana. The pilot and two passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight. A father and son were hiking and as they approached Crown Mountain, they noticed smoke rising over the saddle. Upon reaching the saddle, around 1350, they observed the airplane on a steep slope still smoldering from being on fire. They were able to call the Sheriff from the accident site to report the location.

Glideslope Intercept Altitude The published minimum altitude to intercept the glideslope in the intermediate segment of an instrument approach. Government charts use the lightning bolt symbol to identify this intercept point. This intersection is called the Precise Final Approach fix (PFAF).
