A Daher TBM equipped with a suite of 6 electric motors took its first flight, going up for 100 minutes as the crew established function checks of major systems. The EcoPulse sports a hybrid powertrain, taking flight with a combined battery and turbogenerator arrangement that provides power to a series of electric motors mounted on each wing's leading edge. Rotor Technologies showed off the newest addition to their production line in the form of the R550X, the "largest uncrewed civilian helicopter on the market". USAF Grounds the Osprey

Bodycount Continues to Rise for Military's Favorite Whirligig

The United States Air Force has grounded its fleet of V-22 Osprey aircraft a week after a fatal crash involving 8 Special Operations Command servicemen off the coast of Japan. The USAF isn't saying exactly what they believe happened yet (likely holding out hope they can blame this one too on pilot error), but the Navy and Marine Corps similarly grounded hundreds of their own Ospreys when a preliminary investigation into recovered wreckages seemed to indicate material failure.

Rotor Begins Production on Uncrewed Helicopter

Crop Dusting Operators Push for Rapid Entry into Production

Rotor Technologies showed off the newest addition to their production line in the form of the R550X, the "largest uncrewed civilian helicopter on the market". The aircraft is based on the tried and true Robinson R44 Raven II, granting it a 1,200-lb payload thanks to its lack of pilotage. Much like its parent Raven, the R550X offers 3 hours of endurance and a top speed of 150 mph (given the right conditions, of course) allowing it to be used as an actual aircraft - not a tiny ISR drone.

OSIRIS-REx Return Investigation Complete

Drogue Failure Result of "Inconsistent Wiring Label Definitions"

A recent return mission carrying samples from the asteroid Bennu raised eyebrows at NASA when a drogue chute failed to deploy during the landing sequence. During the return of the OSIRIS-REx mission, a drogue was supposed to deploy at 100,000 feet to stabilize and slow the capsule during a 5-minute descent down to 10,000 feet. Instead, the signal triggered a different reaction at 100,000', jettisoning the parachute prior to it even deploying. With its retention cord cut, the main parachute was forced to take the entire deceleration load on its own. Luckily, NASA says, the margins as designed were sufficient to protect the Bennu sample.

When ANN's Nathan Cremisino took over the lead of our Aero-TV teams, he knew he was in for some extra work and a lot of extra responsibility. Still... with all that, there ARE times when its good to be the top guy.... like when our friends at Aspen Avionics call over and ask if we want to put one of our Aero-TV videographers aboard a formation aerobatic flight with the world-famous Aero-Shell Aerobatic Team. Aero-News: Quote of the Day (12.08.23)

"On the signal side, 'main' meant the main parachute. In contrast, on the receiver side 'main' was used as a reference to a pyrotechnic that fires to release the parachute canister cover and deploy the drogue.
