Airborne Affordable Flyers 11.26.24: BushCat's Back!, LODA Update, DRL Miami

The BushCat was manufactured in South Africa by SkyReach beginning in 2014, selling its first unit to a customer at EAA Oshkosh. It sold nearly 200 kits until April 2024 when it suspended operations. However, SkyReach just announced that the LSA is coming back into production under new branding as “Buchcat Aircraft Australia” with a new management team at the helm. The FAA has published its final rule on a number of regulations covering a smorgasbord of topics in general aviation that Congress mandated in its FAA Reauthorization Acts of 2018 and 2024 as well as the James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of Fiscal Year

Van Celebrates 85 Years By Test Flying New RV-15

Richard “Van” VanGrunsven, the founder of Van’s Aircraft, recently celebrated his 85th birthday by test-flying the new RV-15X prototype. The RV-15 is slated to reach the market in late 2025. Van established the company in 1970 and began selling kits three years later.

Historic UK Airport to Reopen 10 Years After Ceasing Operations

Celebrates Revival by Hosting Manston International Airshow

A small, historic airport in Kent, England is set to reopen 10 years after it was sold and shut down. To celebrate its revival, Manston International Airport will be hosting an airshow of its own. The event is set for August 2025. When Manston Airport was just farmland, it was used as a World War I site for emergency landings. This led to the establishment of the Admiralty Aerodrome, then a bomber training school. This site is now marked by the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum.

Inflatable Space Platform Moves Towards Certification

Sierra Space recently announced that its Large Integrated Flexible Environment 10 (LIFE 10) technology has completed its sixth successful stress test and fourth Ultimate Burst Pressure (UBP) test. This moves the platform one step closer to certification for human habitation. LIFE 10 is Sierra Space’s new inflatable commercial space station structure.

Stratolaunch successfully completed the 20th test flight of its Roc launch platform. The manufacturer will now be increasing test frequency prepping for its recoverable Talon-A2 testbed. The latest test flight included a mid-flight landing, allowing Stratolaunch to switch out its crew before getting back in the air. The second flight crew was able to finalize certification on the aircraft during the flight. Having two certified crews expands Stratolaunch’s ability to conduct more frequent tests. Flameout Pattern An approach normally conducted by a single-engine military aircraft experiencing loss or anticipating loss of engine power or control. The standard overhead approach starts at a relatively high altitude over a runway (“high key”) followed by a continuous 180 degree turn to a high, wide position (“low key”) followed by a continuous 180 degree turn final. The standard straight-in pattern starts at a point that results in a straight-in approach with a high rate of descent to the runway. Flameout approaches terminate in the type approach requested by the pilot (normally fullstop).
