Airborne 11.20.24: Starship 6!, Boom XB-1 Flies Again, Spirit BK

With President-Elect Donald Trump in attendance to see his new buddy Elon Musk, do his thing; Starship 6 launched on time Tuesday afternoon with a spectacular, but not 100% successful result. The much-anticipated attempt to catch the booster in the massive Mechazilla chopsticks was called off shortly after inflight separation for reasons yet unexplained, but it was brought in for a controlled landing in the ocean near where it launched from... with no ill result to anyone. On November 18, Spirit Airlines announced that it has finally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This follows a series of mounting losses, with the recent failed JetBlue merger deal being the cherry on top. Spirit has assured guests that they will still be able to book flights, travel, and use loyalty points as usual.

The BushCat was manufactured in South Africa by SkyReach beginning in 2014, selling its first unit to a customer at EAA Oshkosh. The nearly 450 pilots at CommuteAir ratified a two-year contract extension that brings in significant improvements to their pay, benefits, and quality of life, and represents a major step forward in the airline’s efforts to attract and retain qualified pilots. Of the 85 percent of pilots who voted, 87 percent voted to approve the agreement, demonstrating to CommuteAir the importance of recognizing the expertise and value the pilots bring to the airline.

Blue Origin Sets Liftoff Date for 9th Human Space Flight

NS-28 Expected to Launch in West Texas on November 22

Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin has confirmed a launch date for its 9th crewed space flight, NS-28. The New Shepard rocket will lift off from Launch Site One in West Texas on November 22. 43 passengers have already been taken up to the boundary of space, known as the Kármán line, through this program.

Current US President Joe Biden recently clarified his intention to finalize the Clean Fuel Program before leaving office for good in 2025. The program aims to help the aviation industry reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with a goal of producing 3 billion gallons of SAF annually by 2030.

High School Programs Bringing In More Young People To The Industry

Colorado’s Cherry Creek School District just outside of Denver has a unique program called the Innovation Campus that provides transformative educational pathways for students in 10th to 12th grades, including one that is training future aircraft mechanics. The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus (CCIC) recently expanded its aircraft mechanic program to three years, which combined with the FAA exams taken along the way, will enable students the training and qualifications they need to get a job repairing and maintaining aircraft right after graduation.

Pilot Heard A Loud “Pop” And Felt Heat Coming From Behind The Pilot And Copilot’s Seats

On October 03, 2024, about 1730 eastern daylight time, a North American Navion airplane, N9117R, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Rutherford County Airport / Marchman Field (FQD), Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported that he departed Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (JQF), Concord, North Carolina and was destined for FQD.
