SpaceX is well-known for its ambition to establish a city on Mars. Before it can get there, however, company CEO Elon Musk wants to put the SpaceX name on part of Texas by making its Starbase launch site an official municipality. SpaceX submitted a formal petition to incorporate Starbase as a Type-C Municipality on December 13. The decision is now left up to elected officials of Cameron County, Texas and voters living in the outlined area. The FAA has published an Airworthiness Directive (AD) for Robinson R44 and R44 II helicopters with certain serial numbers (S/Ns), for rivets attaching the belt tension clutch actuator brackets to the fan scroll housing. Reports of failures of these rivets and subsequent failure of the clutch actuator prompted this update to an existing AD.

Pilot Reported Moderate To Heavy Turbulence At His Reported Altitude Of 5,000 Ft

On November 24, 2024, at about 1809 eastern standard time, a Mooney M20J, N58156, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Windham, New York. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulation Part 91 personal flight. The airplane departed from Harford County Airport (0W3), Churchville, Maryland around 1640 and was destined for Albany International Airport (ALB), Albany, New York. Sunset at ALB had occurred at 1625 and the end of civil twilight was at 1656.

“The FAA has found that the risk to the flying public justifies forgoing notice and comment prior to adoption of this rule because cracking in the upper power lever leads to failure of the upper power lever, which could result in loss of engine thrust control and reduced control of the airplane...” Source: Part of a recent AD issued by Uncle Sam following another Cirrus blunder, after which the agency performed several additional inspections that revealed cracks in the upper power levers of 26 more aircraft. For safety purposes, the FAA skipped over the comment period typically left open before enforcing the directive.
