EAA's Educational Program Gets Influx of New Content for K-12 Learning & Activity

The Experimental Aviation Association has added a trio of new collaborations to their free aviation education program, AeroEducate, fleshing out their program for students throughout their primary and secondary schooling. New additions include a partnership with the Aircraft Electronics Association, SafeLaunch, and PlaneEnglish Interactive Training Solutions. The AEA provides their expertise in avionics activities, giving students lessons that touch on the manufacturing, electronics, and installation. PlaneEnglish similarly contributed by drawing on their history of automated and AI-assisted pilot communications exercises.

Design Showcased in the Midst of Monterey Car Week

On August 14, LEO Flight virtually unveiled their LEO Couple -- a groundbreaking all-electric flying car. This debut surfaced during Monterey Car Week’s annual celebration of automotive innovation. It is slated to begin production in 2027.

World Air Sports Federation’s 3rd Championship

The third installment of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI, World Air Sports Federation) World Air Navigation Race (WANR) is taking place in Slovakia. The Aeroclub of Kamenica nad Cirochou in northeastern Slovakia near Prešov is hosting the twelve-day event, which has seen thirty-two dual-pilot teams practicing since August 13. The actual competition began August 18 with landing practice and the Opening Ceremony.

New Features Enhance Nighttime Capabilities

On August 16, uAvionix announced that their Casia G will soon be able to support nighttime operations. This development will significantly expand its utility for Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs.  The Casia G is a ground-based detect and alert system. Its nighttime capability is slated to launch in October 2024.

A PT-6 Conversion For The Venerable Murphy Moose

Kenny Meines of Turbine Motor Conversions brought something pretty impressive to AirVenture last year, his own custom Murphy Moose with a Pratt & Whitney PT-6 hanging on the nose. It’s a real backcountry rocket ship, building on Murphy’s solid foundation by kicking things up a notch, or two. Meines said his converted aircraft pulls off 200 mph cruise speeds to the tune of about 25 gallons an hour of Jet A, a stone’s throw away from the fuel burn of the handsome (but slower) M14 radial engine seen on other Mooses.

Maeve to Collaborate on Hybrid-Electric Turboprop Design

Dutch sustainability marque Maeve announced a collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada for its M80 hybrid-electric regional aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will lend their expertise in turboprop design and development, chipping in on the M80's next-generation engine system. On paper, the Maeve should boast a range around 1,200 nautical miles, while cutting fuel burn and emissions by "up to 40% relative to benchmark regional jets while cruising at comparable speeds and altitudes." Should all go as planned, Maeve expects to see its M80 enter service in 2032. Larry Gaines, of Stockton California, received the 2024 Aviation Spirit Award presented by the Debbie Franceus Memorial Aviation Foundation. The presentation took place prior to the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh event at the annual Bonanzas to Oshkosh (B2Osh) fly-in on July 19 at La Crosse Regional Airport (KLSE) in Wisconsin.

On July 7, 2024, about 2107 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 182A, N2198G was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The pilot and two passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 positioning flight. The flight departed Johnson County Airport (6A4), Mountain City, Tennessee, destined for Rutherford County Airport/Marchman Field (FQD), Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Obstacle Departure Procedure (ODP) A preplanned instrument flight rule (IFR) departure procedure printed for pilot use in textual or graphic form to provide obstruction clearance via the least onerous route from the terminal area to the appropriate en route structure. U.S. Navy Still Investigating The Mishap

On August 15, an incident occurred in ranges at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada. It involved two MH-60S Seahawk Helicopters, each carrying five crew members. The Seahawks are a part of the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 (HSC-12), which is assigned to Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5).
