USN Experimenting With Elimination of Student Carrier Qualifications

Expense-Averse Service Asking if Automation Can Reduce Washouts, Control Costs

The Chief of Naval Aviation Training has started an experiment with student pilots there, selectively doing away with a segment of Carrier Qualification in a 2-year trial. Under the program, the Chief chose a number of Naval student pilots to forgo the 1st block of carrier qualification training in their T-45C Goshawks, believing that the same education can be had later in their career when they're assigned to a Fleet Replacement Squadron. In such a case, a student pilot would come to do the bulk of their early carrier-landing mistakes in larger, advanced, and more expensive airframes, while missing out on the early education that a lighter, smaller, more analog aircraf

European Flight Academy Adds More Diamond Twins

New Colorways Make Handsome Addition to the Training Fleet

The DA-42 remains a popular trainer out in its home market, only further proven thanks to a recent sale of 3 new DA-42NG-VIs to The European Flight Academy. The aircraft will be used in the school's "tradition of providing first-class training conditions for the future pilots of the Lufthansa Group." The most noteworthy aspect of the sale, of course, lies in their special paint jobs, each emblazoned with the colors of a Lufthansa group friend. One aircraft sports the colors of Air Dolomiti, with the carrier's cyan-on-white and corporate logo on each vertical stabilizer. The other unit is more colorful to commemorate the school's diversity, sporting vertical winglets in rainbow striping.

KLM, ZeroAvia Plan Hydrogen-Electric Flights

Testing Will Bear Out the Utility of Sustainable Flight for Regional Flights in Home Market

ZeroAvia has announced an upcoming demo flight using one of their ZA2000 hydrogen-electric engines using an aircraft from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The collaboration will go to prove the viability of converting some of major carriers' small regional turboprops away from their current Jet-A burning units to something cleaner, like ZeroAvia's hydrogen-munching mills. ZeroAvia hopes to be able to pull off a demonstration flight between two airport locations some time in 2026, proving just how ready the ZA2000 is for showtime with a close approximation of an average regional airline's revenue flight.

Pimco: One Year On

Piper’s Industrial Venture Continues Collecting Certifications

A year ago, Piper Aircraft announced its newest endeavor, the Piper Industrial Manufacturing Company, a spinoff of the firm that could use the company's base of equipment and engineering expertise to tackle projects outside the company's purview. Piper checked in on their progress, telling attendees that PIMCO has "achieved several key milestones and is actively pursuing more." First off they bragged about meeting the standards for Stage 1 of the AS9100 Rev D quality system certification audit, giving PIMCO some globally recognized bonafides in the aerospace game. The final Stage 2 audit is expected to be held in the 4th quarter of 2024, and Piper expects to pass it just fine.

Whether you fly ultralight, LSA, certified airplane, military jets, or wide-bodied airliners, there is one aircraft type that practically personifies aviation. That airplane is the Piper J-3 Cub. The 75-year-old design is perhaps the most recognizable, and most copied, airplane that has ever graced the skies. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the airplane, more than 125 Cubs have landed on the grounds of Wittman Regional Airport for AirVenture, 2012. And 75 of those airplanes flew in in a "mass arrival" early in the week, filling the south parking area along runway 18-36 with a virtual sea of yellow ... with the occasional gl

“At Florida Tech, our students learn by doing, and we are eager to get them into the cockpits of these cutting-edge Piper Pilots to start learning with our amazing flight instructors.
