FAA Approves Waiver for sUAS Systems at Michigan Test Site

Permits Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations

uAvionix and Unmanned Vehicle Technologies (UVT) announced jointly that the FAA has granted UVT a waiver to operate its small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) at its Michigan test site. The waiver permits BVLOS operations without the need for visual observers (VOs), made possible through the integration of the uAvionix Casia G ground-based detect-and-avoid (DAA) system which provides comprehensive airspace awareness to ensure safe drone operation beyond the PIC’s visual range.

The Regional Airline Association (RAA) attended the U.S. House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure's hearing for the Subcommittee on Aviation to present thinkpiece called “Eliminating Bottlenecks: Examining Opportunities to Recruit, Retain, and Engage Aviation Talent.” The RAA submitted their written statement about the industry, mostly focusing on the provisions they most want to see implemented quickly from the recent FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024.

NBAA, Like Others, Wants the FAA to Giddyup With New Initiatives

Aviation Subcommittee Hearing Gives Voice to Lobbyists

The National Business Aviation Association returned to the grind of angling for fresh blood in the industry, urging congress to implement some of the high-minded plans enclosed in their recent FAA reauthorization legislation. Every so often the industry seems to remember the impending wave of retirements, which is followed by some anxious glances at the unimpressively slim pilot production pipeline. The NBAA is even a little more grounded than other industry bodies, since their business focus puts them in contact with a wider variety of operators across the world. Developing the next generation of professional pilots is a 'national priority', according to the group.

Ukraine to Begin Receiving F-16 Fighter Jets

NATO Nations Providing Air Power

The transfer of F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role fighter aircraft to Ukraine has begun, with the Netherlands and Denmark sending the fighters as they upgrade their own air forces to the F-35. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the move at the NATO Public Forum in Washington, D.C., on July 10, although he didn’t say how many of the aircraft are in the initial group. A joint statement issued by Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and President Joe Biden stated the nations are committed to “further enhancing Ukraine’s air capabilities, which will include squadrons of modern fourth-generation F-16 multi-role aircraft.”

Army’s Chinook Helicopters Getting Upgrades

Block II Provides Improved All-Around Capabilities

Boeing is performing upgrades to the US Army’s 465 CH-47F Chinook helicopters to the Block II configuration and has delivered the first of the upgraded aircraft, the company announced earlier this month. The upgrades include an improved drivetrain, enhanced fuel system, and a reinforced airframe. Together these give the Block II helicopter an additional 4,000 pounds of max gross weight, and extends the mission radius for almost all payloads. There is also room for future technology upgrades. The Block II improves the aircraft’s maintainability, as the simplification of the fuel system and reliability of its new rotor system minimizes unscheduled maintenance and reduces the ov

NTSB Final Report: Scoda Aeronautica Ltda Super Petrel LS

As The Airplane Approached The Powerlines, It Appeared To Take A Sudden Nose-Down Attitude Before It Impacted

Analysis: The private pilot/owner and the student pilot/passenger departed in the amphibious airplane and flew to a local lake where they were observed conducting a touch-and-go landing and flying low over the water. One witness, who was on his boat dock about 100 yards from a set of energized powerlines that spanned the lake, reported that the airplane was flying level about 100 to 200 ft above the water toward the powerlines. As the airplane approached the powerlines, it appeared to take a sudden nose-down attitude before it impacted the powerlines.

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (07.14.24)

"Aviation in Alaska is essential to the transportation infrastructure. Many of our Alaskan customers rely on our products to access their homes, their communities, and run their businesses. Logistically speaking, Anchorage is the central distribution hub for Alaska. Increasing parts availability and relocating inventory to Anchorage will enable faster delivery times of the critical parts customers need to get back in the air.”  Source: Brad White, Textron’s Senior Vice President of Global Parts and Distribution, discussing why Textron Aviation announced it has relocated its Alaska parts stockroom from Fairbanks to Anchorage. Based on customer feedback the determination was made that the move would improve the acc
