NTSB Prelim: Bell 206

Two Severed Powerline Conductors Were Observed Near The Wreckage

On July 29, 2024 about 1330 central standard time, a Bell 206-B3 Helicopter, N94XA, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Nashua, Iowa. The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The operator reported that the pilot was scheduled to spray insecticide and fungicide over local cornfields. Preliminary data retrieved from an onboard GPS aerial application guidance system showed that the helicopter departed from a farm, about 3 statute miles west of Nashua, at 0905, and proceeded to spray several fields south of the accident site.

Tough Times... Effective August 16, 2024, SmartSky Networks has ceased all business operations. The provider ultimately stated that they were unable to continue to finance their mission. SmartSky Networks went public with their in-flight connectivity mission in 2014. After several delays, their mobile broadband network officially went live towards the end of 2021. An aircraft accident was reported near Hawkins County, Tennessee, where the pilot and sole occupant, race car driver Scott Bloomquist, was reported killed. Bloomquist was not a licensed pilot. ‘Disgruntled’ Worker Crashes Plane Into Former Workplace

Suspected Intentional Collision Killed Pilot On Impact

46-year-old pilot Juan Manuel Medina crashed a rented Cessna 150 into his former workplace. Authorities are still investigating, but their main theory is that the accident was intentional. Medina had been working for Air Liquide, a company that supplies oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen to medical facilities, since June 2023. He served as a warehouse worker for their facilities in western Rosaria, Argentina until being let go last March.

Fire Breaks Out at Historic Wright Brothers Facility

Charges Pending Against a Juvenile in Connection

Around 8:32 pm on August 13, firefighters responded to a fire near West Third Street and Cowart Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. Upon arrival, they determined the fire was inside a historic Wright brothers factory. No injuries have been reported, and Dayton Police arrested a juvenile related to the incident.

High Tech Augments Usual Messaging Methods

New York City has added a new tool to warn residents about threatening weather and flooding: drones. Drones equipped with loudspeakers now buzz around areas of the city where severe weather or flooding is forecast to hit, warning residents to take shelter or evacuate. The drones are in addition to the types of alerts and warnings most of us are familiar with, such as radio, television, text, and social media. There is also a system in place to send alerts that reach more than 2,000 community-based organizations serving people with disabilities and senior citizens.

$72 Million Judgment Against Boeing Overturned

Federal Judge Sides With Boeing

A federal judge agreed with Boeing’s challenges of a jury verdict and nullified the $72 million awarded by the jury to Zunum Aero. Zunum, a Seattle aviation startup, was attempting to develop a hybrid electric airplane and in 2017 entered a partnership with Boeing, where Boeing advanced Zunum $9 million in loans. The startup was unable to gain any traction and ended up suspending its operations in 2019.

Remotely Piloted Aircraft Made By General Atomics Aeronautical Systems

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) has purchased two additional SeaGuardian® Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI). The MQ-9B SeaGuardian is capable of medium-altitude, long-endurance flight of up to 24 hours. JCG deploys and operates SeaGuardian from the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Air Station Hachinohe, primarily conducting Maritime Wide Area Search (MWAS) over the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Missions include search and rescue, disaster response, and maritime law enforcement.
