One of our favorite sport-aviation events, The 16th ANNUAL MidWest Aviation Expo, is on target for September 5-7, 2024 at the idyllic Mt. Vernon Outland Airport (MVN) in Mt. Vernon, IL. The MWAE Midwest Aviation Expo is specifically organized to aid in educating and selling Light Sport Aircraft, LSA Ancillary Services, and LSA-related Services. ICON Aircraft has successfully completed the sale of essentially all its assets to investment banking group SG Investment America (which apparently/ultimately is derived from Chinese ownership), who will continue to operate the company (for now) under the name ICON Aircraft. West Coast Off Long Beach New Destination

SpaceX has decided to reprogram the Dragon landings to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off Long Beach, California. The company explained the move is due to concerns over the module’s trunk section shedding debris during reentry.

Blue Origin Lunar Lander Will Carry NASA Payload

Will Be Blue Moon Pathfinder’s First Mission

Blue Origin’s New Glenn launch vehicle will power the first voyage of Blue Moon Pathfinder to a lunar landing near the lunar south pole as a precursor to subsequent missions. Pathfinder was chosen by NASA to carry a camera system to study the interaction between the lander’s engine thrust plume and the moon’s regolith.

Poland Moves Forward On Apache Purchase

LOA For 96 AH-64Es Supports Polish KRUK Program

Boeing announced that Poland has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for 96 of its AH-64E Apache combat helicopters. The Polish Ministry of National Defence announced an offset agreement with Boeing last week. That agreement is for maintenance and support of the helicopters by the Polish defense industry as well as establishing training programs and a composite laboratory. The offsets are intended to create highly skilled jobs and enhance the capabilities of the Polish defense industry which would lead to economic benefits for the entire country.

Embraer Gets Order For Eight E190-E2 Aircraft

Virgin Australia Replacing Fokker Fleet

Embraer announced it has received a firm order for eight of its E190-E2 small narrowbody aircraft from Virgin Australia. The E190-E2 fleet will be based in Perth, Western Australia, and operated by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA). Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025 with the aircraft entering service in October. The E190-E2s will join VARA’s larger narrowbody aircraft as the airline renews its fleet and replaces the long-serving Fokker fleet. The new aircraft will primarily be used for charter flights as VARA seeks to dominate the charter market in Western Australia.

Army 11th Airborne Division Establishes Alaskan Headquarters

New Organization Will Provide Local Command For Aviation Units

Fort Wainwright, located in Fairbanks, Alaska, is home to two aviation regiments. This includes the 25th, which flies the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, and the 52nd, which flies the CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter. Recently, the Army’s 11th Airborne Division shared that they will be activating a new Arctic Aviation Command to facilitate improved communication between these units and upper leadership.

The Carrier Furthers Its Relationship With Honeywell Technologies

United Airlines’ new additions to the existing Boeing 737 MAX fleet are expected to enter service within the next decade. The carrier was on the lookout for an avionics suite, and found the answer in Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. Honeywell produces engines, cockpit and cabin electronics, mechanical components, and wireless connectivity systems. Its industry applications are immense, having been aboard every NASA space mission to date and being used daily by 140,000 commercial and military aircraft.

Aero News Editor-in-Chief Jim Campbell had a chance to get the last word in Rotax maintenance and operation from Dean Vogel, Technical Director of Lockwood Aviation Repair. Vogel said that the Rotax 916 has only picked up speed in its quest to corner the lightweight, high-performance aero engine market, supplanting classics like Lycoming’s 320 or 360. Witness: Weather Conditions Were “Brutal” And That He Could Barely See The Airplane At 100 Yards Away Due To The Thick Fog

On July 25, 2024, about 1225 eastern daylight time, a Cirrus Design Corp SR22, N990PT, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Trenton, Maine. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. Long Beach will be the new home to SpaceX’s Dragon recovery vessel as their West Coast Recovery Operations team based out of @portoflongbeach will welcome back both @NASA and other private astronauts who are returning to Earth from orbit and beyond.” Source: An obviously pleased Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson who posted on X, formerly Twitter, that SpaceX plans to start moving the recovery operations and splashdowns to the Pacific next year, with the recovery vessel based at the Port of Long Beach.
