What Are YOU Waiting For? 2021 WAI Scholarship Program Officially Opens July 1

With new scholarships being posted weekly, the 2021 WAI scholarship program officially opens July 1, and members can review dozens of scholarships. Currently, there are 56 scholarships offered for flight training, engineering, maintenance, dispatcher, and professional development for individuals in all stages of life. Additional scholarships and internships will be added in the coming weeks and months, with over 100 scholarships expected to be posted by the Fall. Applicants are encouraged to check for new scholarships often, and may apply for up to three scholarships per year.

DoT To Pay Nearly $800 Million in Grants to 347 Airports

Covers 46 States and 4 Territories

DoT will award nearly $800 million in airport safety and infrastructure grants through the FAA to 46 states, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Marshall Islands. "This nearly $800 million Federal investment in airport infrastructure will strengthen safety, improve travel, generate jobs and provide many economic benefits for local communities," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao. The total includes $689 million from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and $104.4 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act grants to equal a 100 percent Federal share.

Gust Of Wind Caused The Left Wing To Raise And Go "Vertical" Or "Knife Edge"

The pilot reported that after a stabilized approach to land, during the touchdown a gust of wind caused the left wing to raise and go "vertical" or "knife edge." He immediately applied full power to go-around, however, the airplane was banking and drifting to the right and before the airplane could climb, it impacted terrain to the right of the runway and skidded down a ravine. The left and right wings sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane.
