Airborne 11.30.16: C Series Type Ratings, ATC Reform, Highest Air Show Grounded?

Also: EAA Warning, ABQ Balloon Fiesta, NTSB, El Al, Coast Guard, Alaska Airlines, Heli Move

The European Aviation Safety Agency and Transport Canada have awarded the CS100 and CS300 airliners with the same pilot Type Rating which provides operators with significant cost-saving opportunities.

Bombardier’s Todd Young said in part, "The Same Type Rating is a reflection of the high commonality between the CS100 and CS300 aircraft. This is great news for customers that operate both aircraft as they will benefit from the cost-effective, minimal training required to transition pilots from one model to the other.” The Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General recently released another critical report highlighting the uncertainty, delays, and reduced expectations in the FAA's NextGen air traffic control modernization program. The IG report also said that NextGen’s objectives remain broad and unclear, and while the costs to carry out the program to its completion are uncertain, the IG and others estimate those costs will be dramatically higher than original projections. Every summer for the past four years, spectators have packed into Dillon’s Marina Park in Dillon, Colorado to watch a highly popular airshow that is called “Highest Air Show on Earth” because of the high elevation of the city. Next year, however, the skies over the waters of Lake Dillon are likely to be quiet, as cost increases have all but scrapped any prospect of a fifth consecutive show. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
