Further studies from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) have determined that, after six years and over $12 billion in investments, the F-35 Lightning stealth fighter is still not combat-ready. This raises concerns regarding the fifth-gen jet’s ability to anchor American air superiority. As a part of a tactical aviation readiness report, the GAO tracked how closely US aircraft were meeting their intended mission-capable rates from 2018 to 2023. Gogo Business Aviation announced that Textron Aviation will offer installation of Gogo’s Galileo HDX as a factory option for the Cessna Citation Latitude, Citation Longitude, and Citation Ascend models of business aircraft. Textron Aviation is the first business aviation OEM to offer Gogo Galileo HDX from the factory, securing a global connectivity solution for its operators. The Galileo system is built on Gogo’s AVANCE platform with a fuselage-mounted HDX antenna, designed in a compact size for business jets.

Chooses Volusia County For 500,00 Square Foot Plant

France-based aircraft builder AURA AERO announced it has selected Daytona Beach International Airport (KDAB) to build its 500,000 square foot manufacturing and assembly facility for production of its hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA). AURA AERO is building the facility to meet demand in the growing North American market, while also progressing with its new facility in Toulouse-Francazal Airport (QYF) in Cugnaux, France.

Defines Pilot Qualifications, Training, and Operational Requirements

The FAA announced a new rule at the 2024 NBAA-BACE that signals the highly anticipated acceptance and integration of powered lift into the FAA’s domain of aviation that it says will chart the path for air travel of the future. The rule establishes the new category of “powered lift” aircraft which have characteristics of both helicopters and airplanes. Operations in the category include air taxi, cargo delivery, and a variety of additional operations in both urban and rural areas.

Russian Plant Accused of Recruiting Young Women for Ukraine War Effort

Several social media outlets, including Google, Meta, and TikTok, have removed the accounts of a Russian drone manufacturer. An Advanced Press investigation accused the plant of recruiting young women to build drones for the Ukrainian war effort. Posts from the drone factory were similarly removed on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Changes In Approach Lighting Made Many Enhanced Vision Sensors Ineffective

Universal Avionics (UA) announced at NBAA-BACE that its ClearVision Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) mitigates recent FAA directives that replaced runway lighting with LED lights. The FAA announced in March 2024 that due to the dwindling supply of incandescent lamps used in runway lighting systems, airports would be required to replace them with more energy-efficient LED lights.

Chuck Coleman Fatally Injured During Aerobatic Routine

Spectators at the 2nd annual Las Cruces Air & Space Expo were shocked and stunned into silence after watching renowned stunt pilot Charles T. “Chuck” Coleman impact the ground during his routine on October 20. Many of those attending the show captured video of Coleman’s routine and one showed him performing rolls, loops, and cuban maneuvers. After about four minutes as he did a series of rolls while climbing, he appeared to enter a tumbling maneuver and descended into an inverted position and then descended in a nose-down attitude into the ground.

NTSB Prelim: Cirrus Design Corp SR22

(Witness) Observed The Accident Airplane “Bank Sharply Then Stall” Before It “Fell Into A Rapid Descent With 3 Rotations”  

On September 27, 2024, about 1010 mountain daylight time, a Cirrus Design Corp. SR-22, N831AZ, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Provo, Utah. The pilot and pilot-rated passenger were fatally injured. Off-Route Obstruction Clearance Altitude (OROCA) A published altitude which provides terrain and obstruction clearance with a 1,000 foot buffer in non-mountainous areas and a 2,000 foot buffer in designated mountainous areas within the United States, and a 3,000 foot buffer outside the US ADIZ. These altitudes are not assessed for NAVAID signal coverage, air traffic control surveillance, or communications coverage, and are published for general situational awareness, flight planning, and in-flight contingency use.
