Roc Engenders Speed Metal

Stratolaunch, the Seattle-based aerospace company and hypersonic flight-test pioneer, cut short a test-flight of its mammoth carrier aircraft, Roc. The twin-fuselage, six-engined, high-wing, mono-plane—which takes its name from the Roc, an enormous mythological bird of prey—has been undergoing flight-testing at Mojave Air and Space Port in preparation for upcoming missions during which it will serve as a launch-vehicle for rocket-powered, hypersonic, test-aircraft.

Fuel-Leak Postpones Cargo Mission to ISS

NASA and SpaceX are standing down from a planned, Falcon-9 launch of the CRS-25 cargo mission to the International Space Station. The Space agency announced the delay last week, citing a possible fuel leak with the Dragon spacecraft. The launch was to have been SpaceX’s 25th cargo mission to the ISS in 2022. NASA states elevated levels of mono-methyl hydrazine (MMH) were detected during the on-loading of propellant to the Dragon spacecraft. Engineers subsequently off-loaded the propellant and oxidizer from the vehicle for purpose of investigating the source of what is presumed to be a leak in the Draco thruster propulsion system. Consecutive Incidents Raise Congressional Concerns

A U.S. Navy helicopter has gone down only 34-miles from the site of an 08 June U.S. Marines Corps V-22 Osprey accident that killed five. All four crew-members aboard the MH-60S Seahawk survived the crash and have been safely recovered—a U.S. Navy statement asserts. The incident—one of several recent mishaps involving U.S. military aircraft—has raised Congressional concerns about the safety of military aviation. Since the the beginning of 2022, the U.S. military—in addition to the [08 June] Osprey and [09 June] Seahawk accidents—has has seen losses of an F/A-18E Super Hornet [03 June], an AH-64 Apache [06 June], and another MV-22B Osprey [18 March].

Faulty Simulator Component Engenders Training Inadequacies

SpiceJet, the Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, has barred ninety of its 650, Boeing 737 MAX flight pilots from flying the aircraft after receiving a fine from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation—India’s civil aviation regulatory body. The fine was levied against the air-carrier after a 30 March 2022 surveillance check at a company simulator training facility turned up an inoperative stick-shaker on the first officer’s side of the simulator used to train pilots. The DGCA penalized the airline ≈ $12,888, ruling that the carrier’s pilot training had a negative impact on flight safety.

But Don’t Get Used To It …

The Biden administration is expected to announce that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will lift its requirement for travelers to test negative for Covid-19 before entering the US; so state officials representing the White House and the CDC. The move will go into effect for US-bound air travelers at midnight on Sunday (12 June), the officials said. The CDC is lifting the manifestly unconstitutional restriction—that the travel industry had lobbied against for months—after determining, ostensibly, that it was no longer necessary "based on the science and data," the Biden administration official said.

Power Decreased And The Flight Instructor Executed A Forced Landing

On June 2, 2022, about 1803 central daylight time, a Cessna 172P, N65497, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near  nnis Municipal Airport (F41), Ennis, Texas. The flight instructor and pilot were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. While enroute to F41, the flight instructor reported that the engine power dropped about 200 rpm on two occasions.
