Flight Delays Mount At Minneapolis-St. Paul

Runway 12L/30R Closed For Repairs, Causing Problems

The day after one of Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport's major runways was closed for repairs, the FAA is reporting arriving flights delayed by an average of 90 minutes at the airport.

Runway 12L/30R is closed so that the center 3,800 feet of pavement can be replaced, a project with an estimated price tag of $17.5 million paid for with government grants and Metropolitan Airports Commission funds. The runway is likely to be closed for two months, and while traffic is being routed to the three open runways at MSP, one of those does not have a precision instrument approach, which Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan said would mean more delays particularly on days when the weather is bad.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reports that when finished, the runway is should have an extended life expectancy of 50 years.
