Flight Experiences Available In Historic Warbird
The historic B-29 Superfortress “Doc” will be in Abilene, Texas, and is available for booking flight experiences before and after the Wings Over West Texas Air Show at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene.
Doc will be open for ground and cockpit tours while at Dyess when not performing on April 18-20. Flight experience rides will be flown out of Abilene Regional Airport (KABI) before the show on April 16-17 as well as April 21 after the show and before it departs for its next stop in Arizona.
The iconic superfortress will be a featured performer at the Wings Over West Texas show, where guests will be able climb up into the aircraft to tour the interior, crew compartments, and cockpit when she’s not flying.
During World War II, 1,644 B-29 Superfortresses like Doc were built in Wichita, Kansas, at the Boeing Company’s plant. Doc rolled off the assembly line 81 years ago in 1944. It is one of only two remaining B-29s along with Fifi that are airworthy and flying at air shows around the country today.
After sitting in a boneyard at the Naval Air Weapons Station in China Lake, California, in the Mojave desert for over 40 years, the aircraft was discovered and rescued by Air Force vet Tony Mazzolini. It took nearly 30 years of dedication and perseverance for him to recover and restore Doc to airworthy condition, and she has been flying at air shows around the U.S. and Europe since 2017.
Josh Wells, B-29 Doc Executive Director said, “Showcasing the 1940s-built technology of the B-29 Superfortress that helped deliver victory for the Allied Forces in the Pacific, while preserving the stories and legacies of the Greatest Generation and honoring the men and women who continue to train and serve to protect freedom is our mission.”
