Nigerian Mock Rescue Ends In Real Disaster

G222 Crashes During Training Exercise

Nigerian Air Force G222 skidded off the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport (DNPO) at 12:13pm on Saturday as it was arriving for a mock disaster drill.  Several injuries were reported from more than 30 Nigerian officials and journalists aboard.

The aircraft was expected to stop on the runway and participate in a mock disaster drill at the airport.  Emergency response teams standing by for the training drill were called into action for the aircraft.

"No life was lost but the aircraft was severely damaged," Port Harcourt police spokeswoman Rita Inoma-Abbey told Reuters.

Reports from Nigerian news agencies claim that most of the injuries sustained in the incident happened after the crash.  Sorting out actual trauma may have been difficult as up to two dozen of the passengers were in costume as disaster victims for the drill.
