Warbird Aircraft Owner Receives Prestigious ‘Lindy’ Award

Rod Lewis Of San Antonio, Texas Honored During AirVenture 2017

Rod Lewis of San Antonio, Texas, has received one of the recreational aviation community highest honors, as Lewis’ aircraft was awarded a prestigious “Lindy” award at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in 2017 in Oshkosh, WI.

Named after Charles Lindbergh, the Lindy awards are given to the best of the best. Every year, hundreds of aircraft arrive to be entered into competition for the highly sought-after Lindy Awards. The Lindys are awarded by EAA for high achievements in aircraft construction and/or restoration. The judges take into account how the aircraft looks and the degree of craftsmanship involved in restoring and maintaining the aircraft. It is considered the highest award available in the world for these areas.

The recognition is given for Grand Champion (Gold), Reserve Grand Champion (Silver) and Champion (Bronze) aircraft in 11 separate categories, including Homebuilt aircraft, Vintage, Warbirds, Ultralights, Seaplanes and Rotorcraft.

Lewis’ received a Gold Lindy in the World War II Warbird category for his Douglas A-20J Havoc.  It was one of fewer than 75 top awards given to nearly 3,000 showplanes eligible for judging at EAA AirVenture, the world’s largest fly-in convention.
