Old Soldier Retires: C-141

Last of Mississippi Guard's Starlifters Decommissioned

As of Tuesday, the huge birds were just a memory in Jackson (MS), as the last Mississippi Air National Guard Starlifter took off for the great airplane boneyard in the sunny desert.

The 172nd Miltary Airlift Wing, at Jackson International Airport, has been supporting the big grey lifters, the first American all-jet transports (top), since 1986; now, the unit will be home to the C-17 (below).

The Adjutant General of the Mississippi National Guard, Major General James Lipscomb, remarked, as the plane made one last slow pass over those assembled, "The 141, today, goes to the boneyard. It's going to be officially retired from the Air Force inventory."

The C-17s are expected to start arriving in Jackson, in nine or ten months.
