X-47B Departs Pax River

Aircraft Being Shipped Back To Northrop Grumman's Manufacturing Plant In CA

An X-47B unmanned aircraft departed NAS Patuxent River, Md. Jan.26 for cross country trip back to Northrop Grumman's manufacturing facility in Palmdale, CA.

But it wasn't flying. The aircraft was loaded onto a flatbed truck for the trip from Maryland to California.

As part of the Unmanned Carrier Air System-Demonstration (UCAS-D) program, the X-47B demonstrated technologies to support the Navy's unmanned carrier aviation efforts.

The second X-47B aircraft will make the same trip next month. Northrop Grumman plans to use both aircraft as test beds for future development programs.

The X-47B was the first unmanned aircraft to make a successful arrested landing on board a U.S. aircraft carrier. That demonstration took place on July 10, 2013 on board the USS George HW Bush. It also conducted a successful autonomous refuelling demonstration in April 2015.
