"Mr. Allen, the only airplane I ever built had rubber bands on
it."
Source: Former Boeing CEO Malcom Stamper, when
asked by his predecessor, Bill Allen, to come aboard for the 747
project. Chronicled by Rob Serling in his book on Boeing, Stamper
accepted Allen's challenge and went on to build not only the
world's biggest commercial airplane, but the world's biggest
factory in which it was assembled. Stamper went west earlier this
week. He died Tuesday of prostate cancer. He was 80.
