Airborne 11.15.24: BasicMed Expands, ATR Goes NO-STOL, Magneto Guard

Expansions to BasicMed operations have now gone into effect. These are included in Section 828 of the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act (H.R. 3935), recently signed into law. Under these new regulations, pilots flying under BasicMed privileges can operate aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of up to 12,500 pounds. Following evaluations of the current market and supply chain, ATR has decided to scrap development of its new ATR 42-600S short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft. As of November 12, 2024, expansions to BasicMed operations have officially gone into effect. These are included in Section 828 of the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act (H.R. 3935), which was signed into law in May. ATR Ditches STOL Aircraft Development

Focuses on Enhancing Existing Product to Meet Market Demand

Following evaluations of the current market and supply chain, ATR has decided to scrap  development of its new ATR 42-600S short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft. Instead, it will continue to enhance its current product portfolio. ATR’s STOL aircraft project has been in the works for over five years, with a partially reconfigured ATR 42-600 taking its first flight in May 2022.

Gulfstream Aerospace announced its ultralarge-cabin Gulfstream G700 recently surpassed 65 city-pair speed records. The latest record-breaking flights included a 6,507 nm/12,052 km trip from Los Angeles to Sydney in just 14 hours and 26 minutes. In addition, a 4,090 nm/7,574 km flight from Savannah to Honolulu was made using a blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Patented Safety Clip On University Training Aircraft, Available For Licensing

Student pilots and their instructors and maintenance personnel at Purdue University now know with certainty that the magnetos are off in Piper Archers in the training fleet, thanks to a new safety device created by aviation experts at Purdue Polytechnic Institute. Michael Davis, director of aircraft maintenance, and Jon Ziulkowski, senior lecturer and Part 141 flight operations quality assessment manager in the University’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology, designed and implemented their invention on all 18 Piper Archer aircraft in Purdue’s training fleet.

NASA Parker Solar Probe Readies For Closest Approach

Will Get Closer To Sun Than Any Craft Has Been

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe was scheduled to perform its final Venus gravity assist maneuver and pass within 233 miles (376 km) of the planet’s surface. The slingshot adjusts the probe’s orbit such that it will swoop to within 3.86 million miles of the Sun’s surface on December 24, 2024. It will be the closest any human-made object has ever been to the Sun. Amazingly, the objective of this mission was first conceived 65 years ago, and Parker’s data will most definitely be charting as-yet uncharted territory.

NTSB Prelim: Extra Flugzeugbau GmbH EA 300/L

Witnesses Described The Airplane Recovered Successfully From Two Different Forward Tumbles Before It Impacted Terrain

On October 20, 2024, about 1424 mountain daylight time, an Extra Flugzeugbau GmbH EA 300/L, N512DW, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident at the Law Cruces International Airport (LRU), Las Cruces, New Mexico. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 air show flight. The pilot was taking part in the Las Cruces Air and Space Expo and was nearing the end of his aerobatic routine. The pilot’s routine began at 1414 with a scheduled duration of 15 minutes.
