Airborne 01.23.19: Stratolaunch Scales Back, Flight Design, DJI Scammed

A few months after the sad passing of its founder Paul Allen, Stratolaunch has shelved several projects in an effort to streamline its operations.

While the company will continue to work on the Stratolaunch aircraft for horizontal launch operations, it has dropped development on a new type of rocket engine as well as launch vehicles it had on the drawing board. “Stratolaunch is ending the development of their family of launch vehicles and rocket engine. We are streamlining operations, focusing on the aircraft and our ability to support a demonstration launch of the Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL air-launch vehicle,” the company said in a media statement. “We are immensely proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to first flight in 2019.” Flight Design has been awarded EASA Part 21G approved Production Organization Approval (POA) by the Civil Aviation Agency of the Czech Republic. “This is good news for owners of CTLS-ELA aircraft currently operating under EASA’s Permit-to-Fly and for new customers looking for an advanced EASA certified light aircraft,” said Flight Design general aviation COO, Daniel Guenther. Drone giant DJI is has investigated more than 40 employees possibly involved in unspecified "corruption" at the company, and has handed several of those cases over to authorities. "DJI holds our employees to strict ethical standards and takes any violation of our code of conduct very seriously. During a recent investigation, DJI itself found some employees inflated the cost of parts and materials for certain products for personal financial gain, which DJI estimates could have cost the company up to RMB 1 billion (approx. $150 million). However, DJI did not incur a full year loss in 2018. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
