After Uproar, PIA Grounds Fokker Fleet

Government Heeds Pilots' Requests

No Fokker aircraft are allowed to carry passengers in Pakistan -- for now. That's the decision of the Pakistani cabinet after the crash of a Pakistan International Airlines F-27 near Lahore this week.

As Aero-News reported, all 45 people on board that aircraft were killed when it went down shortly after take-off. So far... there's no indication why the twin turboprop crashed -- there was no communication between the flight crew and controllers before the crash. Both flight recorders have been recovered and are now being analyzed.

Immediately after the accident, PIA pilots called for the remaining six F-27s in the company's fleet to be grounded... a move the company refused. It's now apparently been overruled by the government. All six surviving aircraft were used on rather busy domestic routes.

The Pakistan Times reports C-130s and Boeing 737s will be used on those routes until the airline takes delivery on several new ATR-42s sometime in the near future.
