Says US Airways, Continental Would Inject New
Competition
The US Department of Transportation Friday proposed to
award Continental Airlines and US Airways new rights to fly to Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. If the decision is finalized, Continental could
operate a new daily nonstop roundtrip flight from Houston as early
as June 1 and US Airways could begin a new daily nonstop roundtrip
flight from Charlotte, NC on October 1.
National-flag carrier Air Botswana took delivery this week of
its first new ATR 72-500, in accordance with a deal for two ATR
72-500s inked last year and valued at roughly US $37 million. The
carrier will add its new ATR 72-500s to its current fleet of three
ATR 42-500s, operating the new turboprops on routes previously
operated by regional jets that become unprofitable.
Bisignani Says Original Forecast Proved "Very Optimistic"
The International Air Transport Association tracks the airline
business all over the world. Its latest forecast is that 2009 will
be uglier than first predicted.
While we're still months away from the first flight of Boeing's
787 Dreamliner, the planemaker announced Thursday the sixth and
final 787 Dreamliner designated for flight test is now undergoing
final assembly in Everett, WA. The airplane, designated ZA006, will
be powered with General Electric GEnx engines.
