UAV To Be Flown To Altitudes Up to FL650 Over The Tropical Pacific For Research Purposes
Starting this month, NASA will send a remotely piloted research aircraft as high as 65,000 feet over the tropical Pacific Ocean to probe unexplored regions of the upper atmosphere for answers to how a warming climate is changing Earth.
Milky Way Galaxy May Contain 17 Billion Planets Of Similar Size
The quest to determine if planets like Earth are rare or common is taking another stride forward. Using NASA's Kepler spacecraft, managed by NASA Ames Research Center, astronomers are beginning to find Earth-sized planets orbiting distant stars. A new analysis of Kepler data shows that about 17 percent of stars have an Earth-sized planet in an orbit closer than Mercury. Since the Milky Way has about 100 billion stars, there are at least 17 billion Earth-sized worlds out there.
Eighth Satellite In The Landsat Series To Be Launched In February
NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) is scheduled to launch February 11 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. A joint NASA and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mission, LDCM will add to the longest continuous data record of Earth's surface as viewed from space.
Students Wrote Software To Control Spheres Aboard The ISS
NASA joined the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and high school student teams from the United States and abroad for the fourth annual Zero Robotics SPHERES Challenge Friday, January 11. The event was held on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA, and aboard the ISS.
Lease For Use Of Spaceport America Is Over $85K Per Month
Virgin Galactic is reportedly set to begin lease payments this month to Spaceport America in Las Cruces, NM. The State of New Mexico said that the commercial space company will begin accruing rent on January 15, 2013.
