Intends To Document Spending One Week In Each State
By: Maria Morrison
While many people utilize their aircraft to go on day trips or overnight camping, Kyle Fosso and his girlfriend Samantha Hagan are taking the idea to the extreme. The pair is taking a 1954 Cessna 170B around the US, spending one week in each of the fifty states.
The aircraft was damaged in an accident in 1972, and it sat untouched for 40 years until Kyle began restoring it when he was 15. Now 19, he has completely restored the aircraft and the couple has begun their trip. They both noticed what Samantha described as a “big gap between those who have prior experience in aviation and those who are outside the aviation world. To them, flying seems untouchable.” The purpose of their trip, about which they are vlogging along the way and working on a 50-part documentary series, is to show the versatility and usefulness of the airplanes.
Although they are from Anacortes, Washington, they started documenting the series in Utah. Samantha said that if they didn’t get away from home on the first leg, they would keep delaying their departure. They then made their way across the northern states to AirVenture, where they spent the week before exploring the rest of Wisconsin and heading east. They will continue clockwise around the US, ultimately ending in Washington. After that, they will go to Alaska and Hawaii in a currently undisclosed manner.
Kyle is a private pilot, and Samantha is interested in getting her certificate as well. Kyle is also an A&P, so they are doing mechanic work on the way when necessary. Since their journey is dependant on weather, there is no definitive timeline. While in each state, it is their goal to not go to the common “touristy” places but instead to the ones “someone from that state might not even know about.” They are open to local advice on which airports visit. Their vlogs are posted on the link below, where you can follow their “Adventure Above.”
