Alaska Airlines To End Colorado Springs Service

Cites Pilot Shortage As The Primary Reason For The Change

Service to Colorado Springs by Alaska Airlines will end on November 4, the airline announced last Thursday. The reason? A pilot shortage that has led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights this summer.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that the carrier has been providing non-stop service from Seattle to Colorado Springs since November, 2013 through regional carrier Horizon Airlines. The carrier reportedly sold nearly 83 percent of the available seats on the route, according to the paper.

But the airline cut its schedule by more than 6 percent in late June, saying there were not enough pilots to fly the regional routes.

In a new release, Colorado Springs director of aviation Greg Phillips said that the city is disappointed in Alaska's decision, but the airport is "aggressively pursuing other carriers to provide service to Seattle, an important destination for our region."

Frontier Airlines was planning a Tuesday news conference to announced new service to Colorado Springs beginning next summer.
