Jetstar B717 Evacuated; Sparks Fly From Engine

Three PAX Hurt

Three passengers aboard a Jetstar Boeing 717 were hurt Tuesday as they were evacuated from the aircraft after a crew member noticed sparks and smoke emitting from one of the engines.

The three passengers, among 25 who were rushed out of the aircraft's exits and down emergency slides, received slight injuries as they egressed the aircraft.

The 717 (file photo of type, below) was on the ground in Hobart, Australia, when the alarm was sounded. The plane was supposed to fly to Sydney. There was no immediate indication as to the cause of the engine problem. Australia's Transportation Safety Board dispatched investigators from Sydney.

The uninjured passengers were flown to Sydney aboard a Qantas flight later in the day.
