Helo Pilot Dies At Controls Shortly Before Takeoff

Had Recently Passed FAA Medical

They called him Stan... Paul Kaiser, a 32-year veteran of the Columbus, OH police aviation unit. Day after day, night after night... he was the eye in the sky looking over the shoulders of officers on the ground, alerting them to suspects -- and dangers -- they couldn't see from the ground.

Early Monday morning, the 59-year old law enforcement veteran was spooling up... going through the checklist with co-pilot Roger Howard... when he suddenly collapsed at the controls of his helicopter.

Howard quickly secured the helicopter on the pad, and ran for help. He and other officers made sure the helicopter was properly safed, then performed CPR on Stan until medics arrived. But to no avail.

Stan died Monday at Ohio State University Medical Center. We have no certain cause of death, but officials say Stan appears to have died of a massive heart attack.

Stan had just passed his FAA physical June 30.
