ERAU Achieves S-BAO Recognition For Aviation Safety Management System

First Flight Training Organization In The Nation So Recognized

The Flight Training Department at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus has become the first flight training organization in the nation to complete stage 1 registration of the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO).

IS-BAO registration is a rigorous auditing process that evaluates the functionality and effectiveness of an organization’s safety management system. IS-BAO criteria consist of an industry code of best practices that has been developed by the international business aviation community, through the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), based on the established standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

While the flight training industry is governed by strict regulations to ensure safety, the industry lacks a standard that provides guidance and/or evaluation of a flight training organization’s safety management system. IS-BAO standards were meant to apply to business aviation operators, but can be applied to aviation training organizations as well.

“At Embry-Riddle safety is our primary goal," said Ken Byrnes, Chairman of the Flight Training Department at the Daytona Beach Campus. "The achievement of IS-BAO registration provides further verification of our robust safety management system and strong safety culture. At the same time it solidifies our safety practices as being on par with the world’s finest aviation organizations.”

“IBAC congratulates Embry-Riddle’s Flight Training Department on attaining IS-BAO registration,” said Kurt Edwards, Director General of IBAC. “In addition to being a preeminent center of aviation-safety instruction, the Department has demonstrated that it practices what it teaches: a commitment to leadership in safety management and risk mitigation.”
