Model Aircraft Enthusiasts Petition Government To Change UAV Rule

Ask For Signatures On The 'Change.org' Website

The release of the FAA's UAV registration rule that includes model airplanes long flown without such rules has prompted one model airplane hobbyist to try to change the agency's mind.

"What do you see in this photo?" asks Keith Williams of Kansas City, MO (pictured), who established the petition.

"Your decision to require all model aviation enthusiasts to register themselves and their aircraft has put a stain on the hobby in public and government eyes. As an organization with so much influence, the FAA has a responsibility to help inspire the next generation of engineers who will be making American aviation the safest and most efficient industry in the world. Your decision does nothing but hinder this.

"I got into model aviation while it was sanctioned exclusively and effectively by the AMA," Williams wrote. "They, unlike the FAA, do everything possible to educate those in the hobby rather than restrict them and make them feel like criminals who must be watched and regulated.

"If you were a newcomer to the hobby, and when you decided to get your first aircraft, what would you do if you were told you must register yourself, giving your address, name, and money just so you can fly your toy?  It's not about the amount of money, the principle is just wrong.

"Take a quick look at this photo again.

"In this photo, I see a young mind being inspired.

"In this photo, you see a threat to national security. That is fundamentally and absolutely wrong."
