Sources Say Monarch Airline Will Go Boeing

U.K. Carrier Expected To Order 30 737s

Sources say that the U.K. carrier Monarch is planning to order 30 737 airplanes from Boeing in advance of the Farnborough Air Show coming up mid-month.

The move comes as a surprise to some industry-watchers who had expected the airline to pick Airbus for its new airplanes during a competition that went on for months. Reuters reports that the commitment has caused some analysts to speculate about a potential price war between the two giant planemakers.

Boeing did not confirm the order saying it does not comment on ongoing negotiations. A spokesman for Monarch Airlines told Reuters that the carrier is "at an advanced stage in evaluating a range of options for re-equipping its fleet to enhance the economics of the airline and the standards of service it provides to its millions of customers."
