Aero-TV: Scion SA-400 Jackal - An Optionally Piloted Rotorcraft

Full-sized Helicopter Performance With The Safety Of A UAS...

ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell attended the 2014 convention of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and talked with Jim Sampson, the test pilot and Chairman of the Board of Scion UAS. The video opens with Jim standing in front of their optionally piloted SA-400 helicopter. According to Sampson they designed it as an optionally manned aircraft to allow it to operate in the national airspace system.

Sampson said their first customer is the Naval Research Laboratory. Because of the need for shipboard operation, the SA-400 is equipped for autonomous operation for shipboard deployment. The SA-400 is currently based on an existing airframe but they plan to develop a completely independent aircraft.

When Sampson was asked about the most likely uses for this type of helicopter, he answered that it can fill a number of roles. They include shipboard operation for both military and commercial uses, agriculture, police work, and the list goes on. He added, they’re even planning for it to be used in a remote-controlled version to pick up an injured soldier on the battlefield. In this video you’ll see demonstrations of the SA-400 in-flight and a computer’s eye view of how it is seen from a remote location.
