Hurricane Irma Causes Severe Damage To Princess Juliana Airport

Iconic Airport On St. Martin Feels Full Fury Of The Storm

One of the Caribbean's iconic airports has been severely damaged by Hurricane Irma, which passed over the Virgin Islands as a category 5 hurricane.

Princess Juliana Airport is known as a place where people can stand at the airport fence and be close to the landing airliners.

But after the storm, images were circulating on social media showing extensive damage to the roof of the building, sand washed up onto the runways and taxiways and into the main terminal, and no airplanes on the tarmac, according to a report from USA Today. Inside the building, check-in counters and terminal areas have been severely damaged. Some photos appear to show a portion of a jet bridge lying on the ground near the terminal.

Little more is known about the situation at this time.
