Rita Becomes A Hurricane

AOPA: Gulf Coast Pilots Should Make Plans To Protect Their Aircraft

Rita Tuesday became the ninth hurricane of the season, as it began to lash southern Florida and the Florida Keys and moved steadily west into the Gulf of Mexico.

Both hurricane and tornado warnings have been posted for the area. The storm is forecast to gather intensity as it leaves Florida and heads toward the Texas Gulf Coast. Landfall in the Gulf Coast is predicted for sometime late Friday or early Saturday.

Some forecasters predicted the storm would become a Category Five hurricane before making landfall somewhere along the Texas coast by the weekend.

For aircraft owners in the region, now would be a good time to review AOPA's information on how to protect your aircraft in a major storm. Remember also to check your insurance policy. Many will pay for reasonable expenses to move your aircraft to a safer area.
