Sun 'N Fun Volunteers Express Discontent Through Facebook

Says Event Is 'Dying A Slow And Painful Death'

A Facebook page established by a long-time volunteer at the Sun 'n Fun fly-in in Lakeland, Florida calls on others concerned about the future of the event to address what he says are serious problems, particularly with the current Board of Directors.

Dale Faux established the page, on which he stresses that it is not his intent to "cause harm to Sun 'n Fun." Rather, he says it is a "call to action" for other volunteers to work with him to make changes in how the event is organized and run.

Faux says that the "the event we built and was recognized internationally as a world-class convention has slowly spiraled out of control into something hardly distinguishable from a county fair."

Faux last year established an unofficial Volunteer Advisory Committee made up of about 25 long-time volunteers at the event. He says one of the systemic problems at the event is that the only people allowed to vote on new members of the board are existing members of the board, and that the current board does "not have our best interest at heart." He says that the focus is on the "bottom line" and the board does not pay attention to the dwindling number of visitors or vendors.

Faux says the board should make his unofficial Volunteer Advisory Committee official, with a say in who is elected to that board. He also says board membership should be preceded by a minimum of 20 years of volunteer service to the event.
