Octogenarian Dead In Ultralight Mishap

Crashed On Take-Off In Florida

A Florida man was killed Sunday when his ultralight trainer nose-dived into Runway 9/27 at Charlotte County Airport. Authorities said he died on impact.

Raymond Philbrick was 80 years old and lived in North Port (FL). The aircraft, reportedly a Challenger, crashed just after take-off. Witnesses said they heard a "sputtering" noise just before the aircraft went down.

Two runways at the airport were closed for much of Sunday as the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident. Spokesman Bob Carpenter said the FAA and NTSB would not investigate the accident, but Airport Manager Gary Quill said the FAA would probably send a team to check the wreckage.

Philbrick had a handheld radio with him at the time of the accident, but did not issue a distress call, said Quill. There was no explosion and no fire.
