Airbus Chartered For Asylum Flight To Australia Aborts Takeoff

Pilot Attempted Departure With Rear Stairs Deployed, Dragging The Tarmac

An airplane chartered to take asylum-seekers to Australia had to abort its takeoff a week ago Sunday night because the crew did not retract the rear stairs before starting their takeoff run.

The plane was departing from the Cocos Islands. The Australian reports that customs officials and customers jumped an airport fence in an effort to attract the pilot's attention. One witness, electronics businessman Jack O'Donnell said the stairs were showering sparks and making a "hell of a racket" as they dragged along the runway.

Once the pilot stopped the airplane, the crew was contacted by radio and told of the situation. The stairs were secured and the airplane took off normally.

A spokesperson for Australia's Air Transport Safety Bureau said they expected a full report on the incident within 72 hours, and that an investigation would be launched.
