Airborne 01.15.20: Shootdown Arrests, Airbus BelugaXL, Orbis Flying Eye Hospital

Authorities in Iran have made several arrests in connection with the accidental shootdown of a Ukrainian airliner last Wednesday, and President Hassan Rouhani has said that those involved in the "painful and unforgivable" incident "should be punished."

Rouhani said in a televised speech that the judiciary "should form a special court with a ranking judge and dozens of experts. This is not an ordinary case. The entire world will be watching this court." Iran initially said that the plane had gone down with the loss of all aboard, many of them Iranian citizens, due to a mechanical issue. But video that found its way to the Internet showed a missile hitting the plane. The ‘aeronautically obese’ BelugaXL has entered into service, in order to support the on-going production ramp-up of commercial aircraft programs. The aircraft made its first operational flight on 9 January. This is the first of six BelugaXL to begin work alongside the BelugaST predecessors, with the additional aircraft being introduced between 2020 and 2023. Launched just over five years ago, the aircraft program was awarded Type Certification by EASA in November 2019, following an intensive flight test campaign that saw the BelugaXL complete more than 200 flight tests, clocking over 700 flight hours. The world’s only flying ophthalmic teaching hospital makes its inaugural landing in Lakeland, FL at the 46th annual Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo taking place March 31st – April 5th, 2020. Orbis International’s Flying Eye Hospital is an MD-10 aircraft that travels the world providing first-rate surgical services to those in need as well as ophthalmology training, presentations, and live surgical demonstrations to eye care professionals in low- and middle-income countries. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
