Pilot Confusion Nearly Leads To Midair Collision

Two Aircraft Depart The Same Runway Seconds Apart

A Cessna Citation and a Bombardier Challenger nearly collided while departing from Mumbai airport in India Sunday, after the Bombardier pilot apparently followed ATC instructions intended for the Citation.

The Times of India reports that the two aircraft took off seconds apart from the same runway at Mumbai, and then closed within one nautical mile during departure. As the Citation climbed through 1,100 feet, controllers told that pilot to maintain 2,000. The Bombardier pilot also leveled off at 2,000, causing the near collision.

The Bombardier pilot, who was enroute to Delhi, was questioned by Directorate General of Civil Aviation, but was released after what the paper describes as an alleged intervention by the Civil Aviation Ministry. He is expected to be questioned further about the incident.
