Commemorative Air Force Names New President

Long-Term CAF Member David Oliver Takes Over as President and CEO

After a nearly four-month search, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has selected its new President and CEO. The board chose from within, nominating long-term member and leader David Oliver for the role.

Former CAF President and CEO Henry “Hank” Coates stepped down in August following a six-year term. He previously served as a Naval Officer and Aviator for nearly 23 years, flying numerous aircraft and spending two tours directing foreign military flight training. During his CAF presidency, Coates oversaw and assisted the organization through several key milestones and events regarding safety, operations, development, and membership.

The CAF utilized an executive search firm to launch a nationwide search for Coates’s replacement. It named its then Chief Operating Officer David Oliver as the Interim President and CEO in the meantime. However, after over three months in the role, the CAF decided that Oliver was there to stay.

"Throughout this process, it became evident that the individual best suited for this role was already a part of our team,” expressed Eric Zipkin, the CAF Chief of Staff. “David has consistently demonstrated the vision, passion, and expertise to guide the CAF as we grow and expand our impact."

David Oliver has been involved with the CAF for 15 years. He dedicated himself to several leadership roles in the organization throughout this time, including serving on its Headquarters staff for 13 years.

"It is an incredible honor to serve as the new President / CEO of the Commemorative Air Force,” Oliver stated. “I look forward to working alongside our incredibly dedicated members, volunteers, and supporters to continue our vital work of educating generations and keeping the legacy of these historic aircraft and the heroes who flew them alive. Together, we will ensure that the history of our country remains a source of inspiration and pride for years to come.”

The CAF has four primary segments: the Commemorative Air Force, the American Airpower Heritage Museum or Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center, the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum, and the American Airpower Heritage Foundation. While each has an individual board, Oliver will serve as the President and CEO of all four.
