Sonoma Cops Bust Attempted Plane Thief

Augustin Ortiz Arrested for Taking An Aircraft Without Consent

Sonoma County Sheriffs recently arrested a man who they claim attempted to steal an airplane from a California airport late last year. He is scheduled to stand trial in Santa Rosa on February 25.

At around 9:30 am on October 13, 2024, a mechanic was working on an aircraft at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) with the engine running. He then noticed a man, later identified as 29-year-old Augustin Ortiz, approaching the aircraft and opening the door. The mechanic attempted to shoo Ortiz away, but instead caused him to flee towards a private hangar on the southwest part of the airport.

Ortiz proceeded to hop into a plane and turn on its battery and lights. The mechanic continued to yell at him to leave, causing Ortiz to exit the aircraft and duck into the woods. Officials later noted that Ortiz likely entered and exited the field from an area that had been cleared to construct a fence.

Sonoma County Sheriffs were dispatched to the scene and, despite using drones, a police dog, and a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol, were unable to locate the suspect. Authorities got help from the community to identify Ortiz and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Almost exactly three months later, on January 12, the Santa Rosa Police Department caught Ortiz. He was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail on charges of taking an aircraft without consent and trespassing on airport property. Ortiz was later released on his own recognizance.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the community members who provided the tips and the Santa Rosa Police Department for their invaluable assistance,” it posted on social media. “Your support is greatly appreciated."

Ortiz is now slated to appear before Judge Kenneth Gross in Santa Rosa’s Sonoma County Superior Court on February 25.
