AeroSports Update: Training In Historic Military Aircraft

Registration Is Now Open For The EAA’s Ultimate Warbird Trainer Fantasy Flight Camp, Taking Place September 11-13

When you see the term Fantasy Flight Camp it brings to mind the great summer programs out there to introduce young people to aviation. However, this program has a minimum age of 18 years old, and it will probably be populated by those who appreciate the significance of World War II flight training.

The Ultimate Warbird Trainer Camp experience involves a weekend at the EAA Aviation Center in Oshkosh, where participants will discover more about, and fly aboard, two of EAA’s own military World War II Army Air Corps trainers.  “Campers” will fly the Consolidated PT-3 (the only flying PT-3 in the world) and the North American AT-6, also known as the “pilot-maker.” Both aircraft are legends in primary and advanced military training.

The training involves in-depth ground instruction on both aircraft throughout the weekend, capped off by a 30 to 35-minute flight in the PT-3 and T-6. Each flight will begin with an informative session on the aircraft and its controls and EAA’s own pilots and instructors will perform the takeoffs.

Once airborne, the pilot instructors will demonstrate maneuvers in the airplane and then the participants will have a chance to do their own flying. This allows a unique opportunity to get the feeling and understanding of what the young trainees preparing for war must have experienced.

EAA says that every effort is made to create a true fantasy experience for the aviation enthusiast - including privileged access to various EAA facilities and specialists. Dubbed “the ultimate interactive experience,” the participants will also receive logbook entries that will ensure some great memories.

The package cost $1500 and includes the following:

  • Flight experiences in both a PT-3 and T-6 (15 minutes of stick time for each)
  • Instruction materials
  • Ground schools
  • Logbook endorsement
  • Keepsake certificate
  • On-site transportation
  • Meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
  • Two nights stay in the EAA Air Academy Lodge
