Classic Aero-TV: All Things Old May Be New Again--The Ultimate 'Classic' Kitfox

Coolest Kitfox EVER Gets Serious Attention At Oshkosh 2010

There's something about the Kitfox... an aircraft series that was a true pioneer in the sport aviation arena for quite a number of years... and through good times and bad. It was the aircraft that brought thousands of pilots to aircraft ownership and inspired many thousands more to pursue flight. As uniquely identified with the early sport kit revolution as the Piper Cub was to early GA, the Kitfox has not only weathered the last few decades fairly well, but may yet see some of its finest days... in its future.

But... eyeball after eyeball was averted to one side or another when cruising the North end of the Oshkosh sport aircraft vendor and display area... as the sight of a highly modified Kitfox Super Sport Series 7 (N12KA) in classic black and yellow paint and sporting a finely adapted Rotec radial engine looked for all the world as if the bird was the child of an illicit union between a Monocoupe and a Kitfox. The effect was stunning and the machine not only drew glances from far and wide, it walked away from Oshkosh 2010 with a serious award, a Bronze Lindy.

The Rotec conversion package is now available from Kitfox aircraft and interested builders can recreate this vision for themselves. The bird does 110 mph, on 5-7 GPH, and features all the usual Kitfox accoutrements... including one of the slickest folding wing mechanisms in the business.

Best of all, the latest iteration of the Kitfox company shows serious staying power with excellent marks for customer service by current clients... and while the past history was at times, a turbulent one, current owner John McBean's helmsmanship appears to be just what the 'Fox ordered.
