Family Finds Glasair Door In Their Pool

Plane Makes Safe Landing At IGM

The pilot of a Glasair II sport plane was no doubt surprised when the plane's left door departed the aircraft while in flight... but that pilot probably wasn't as shocked as the Kingman, AZ family below.

KPHO-5 in Phoenix reports Cory Cobanovich was barbecuing with the rest of his family Sunday, when his brother saw an object falling. Seconds later, a loud boom came from the backyard.

"(It) sounded like someone picked up a gas grill and threw it over the fence," Cory said. "It was one of the loudest, most obnoxious noises I've ever heard."

The source of that 'obnoxious' nose soon became clear... when Cobanovich found the left-side gullwing door of the plane in his swimming pool. He called the Kingman Police Department, and Sgt. Bob Fisk came out to retrieve the part.

"(I've) been here 15 years and never had a call like that," Fisk said. "I thought it was kind of unbelievable."

Meanwhile, the Glasair made a safe emergency landing at the Kingman Airport (IGM.) The FAA sent an investigator to look into the incident, and at this point it's not known why the door departed the aircraft.
