Germany Bans Flights Over Munich Oktoberfest

Terrorism Threats Prompt The Ban

German authorities banned all flights over Oktoberfest festivities Saturday due to increased chatter from Islamic terror groups threatening to target Germany for its role in Afghanistan.

German authorities said terror groups including al-Qaida and the Taliban released video and audio messages over the past two weeks threatening German citizens attending Oktoberfest. The most recent Taliban video showed pictures of Oktoberfest and threatened attacks on Germany.

Oktoberfest spreads across 77 acres of Downtown Munich's Theresienwiese beer garden during the 16 day celebration, according to The Associated Press. As many as 6 million visitors wander among the tents during the celebration.

Oktoberfest has been the target of terror attacks in the past, including a bomb attack in 1980 that killed 13 people. The flight ban will remain in effect until the event ends October 4th.
