Missoula Police BOLO: Low-Flying P-51

Buzzed Grizzly Stadium Before Game

The search is on in Missoula, MT, for witnesses to a low-pass made by a P-51 Mustang over Washington-Grizzly Stadium just before the big game on Saturday. The FAA says the pilot may have been flying too low and too fast.

It happened just before the University of Montana game against California Polytechnical. FAA investigators said the Mustang (file photo of type, above) overflew the stadium at 200-500 feet AGL on a flight from Shelby to Missoula. They also say the pilot, whose name they would not release, may have been flying much faster than regulations allow.

The Mustang landed at Missoula International Airport and was parked at Northstar Aviation.

"Just imagine if that plane had flown by while the skydivers were coming down," University of Montana Public Safety Director Ken Willett told the Montana Missoulian.

The FAA is reportedly looking for anyone who can positively identify the aircraft by its appearance or its N-number.
